The Youth Zone is governed by members of the local authority and business community, who volunteer their time to support a Senior Management Team to ensure the success of the Youth Zone. Each member of the Board brings their skills and experience to assist Mahdlo in achieving its aims and objectives.
SIR NORMAN STOLLER CBE DL – PRESIDENT
Norman is former Chairman and owner of Seton Products and passionate about Oldham and its people. Stoller Charitable Trust is Mahdlo’s Founding Patron. He sees Mahdlo as enabling young people to “explore new opportunities, gain new skills, try out new ideas, raise aspirations and fulfill their true potential.”
TERRY FLANAGAN – CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Terry is a former professional rugby league player, who has played for Great Britain and at club level for Oldham. Terry’s career includes thirty years in the telecoms industry. He bought, sold and merged companies and in recent times operated as business lead in turnaround situations. He wants Mahdlo to “develop and create the good people of Oldham’s future!!”.
William is managing director of JW Lees (Brewers) Limited, a family firm with a long history of brewing, based in Middleton. William is keen to promote the Oldham business sector, sitting on Oldham Business Leadership Group and acting as sponsor of The One Oldham Business Awards.
Dave is HR Director of Diodes and a keen promoter of Oldham’s business sector as chair of the Oldham Leadership Group. Dave has responsibility for HR on the Mahdlo board.
John is Senior Partner of North Ainley Halliwell Solicitors based in Oldham and President of the Oldham Law Association. John joined the Board, because he sees Mahdlo integrating many communities and having a big impact on young people. John is responsible for all legal matters on the Mahdlo board.
Lindsay is a Director of Greengate Metals, based in Middleton. Greengate Metals is a Founder Patron of Mahdlo. Lindsay decided to get involved, because Greengate Metals is based in Oldham as are most of his staff. They have been in business for 50years and “it’s a way of giving back to the community.” Lindsay is responsible for facilities management on the Mahdlo board.
Born and bred in Oldham, Kashif passionately believes in his home town. Kashif is an education consultant and qualified lecturer in the lifelong learning sector, and he previously worked at Positive Steps Oldham. Kashif feels that a “state-of-the-art world-leading youth centre just tops it for the town.” Kashif is responsible for community cohesion on the Board.
Janelle serves as trustee for the Barker Foundation and is a partner in real estate investment trusts. She advises various universities, museums and charities on fund raising. Janelle and her husband David are Founder Patrons. They feel Mahdlo offers great opportunities for “mentorship whether in sports, the arts, or entrepreneurship.” Janelle is responsible for fundraising on our Board.
David Whaley is managing editor at the “Oldham Evening Chronicle.” A resident of Shaw, David was educated at Chadderton Grammar School (now North Chadderton) and joined the “Chronicle” in 1979 as a junior reporter. He left in 1985 to work on newspapers in Lincoln and Birmingham before returning to Oldham in 2000 as deputy editor. David joined the Mahdlo board in 2013 taking over from his predecessor in the editor’s chair, Jim Williams, who had backed the project from its inception.
CHRIS WAREING – VICE CHAIR
Chris is the Co-owner / Director of Bedspace Resource Ltd, who provide accommodation and support to vulnerable young people across the North of England and supports long term sustainable Independent living. Chris joined the Mahdlo board in 2016, and is keen to share the knowledge and experience of working with Young People within his own business with the wider Mahdlo and OnSide Teams. Prior to this Chris was an Operational Intelligence Officer serving with the British Army around the world. “Mahdlo makes me proud to say I’m from Oldham”
STEPHEN HILL MBE
Stephen has been teaching 20 years and been Deputy Head and Year 6 Teacher at St. Joseph’s RC Primary School for 14 years. He has been awarded an MBE for Services to Education & Charity and hopes to continue to inspire children to be the best they can be. Through a number of fundraising challenges, including desert treks, mountain climbs and a North Pole marathon, Stephen has raised over £70,000 for a variety of charities.
Steph is Chief Executive of Positive Steps Oldham, a partner of Mahdlo and a provider of integrated services for young people. Steph is responsible for local engagement on the Mahdlo board.
