Jayne’s opportunity to shine

The Stars Awards recognise young peoples’ achievements and the progress they’ve made throughout their time at Mahdlo. Whether that’s a week, a year, or for some young people, over a decade of membership.

Building confidence, developing new skills, becoming a positive role model, or getting involved in projects and fundraising opportunities. There are no boundaries for what young people can achieve. It’s their opportunity to shine.

Jayne has attended 1036 sessions at Mahdlo since joining in 2014. That’s an average of two visits a week, every week, for the last nine years!

When she first joined Mahdlo, Jayne would often score herself one or two out of five for both confidence and aspirations in regular wellbeing assessments.

Throughout her time at Mahdlo, Jayne has been supported to develop her skills and confidence by getting involved in every opportunity, in particular our Get Creative programme of performing and visual arts, and one-to-one mentoring.

As her confidence grew, she began volunteering with the Oldham Dementia Service. She was inspired to take on this role because ‘she wanted to be able to do what the people who looked after her grandma did’.

This role was something that had personal significance to this young person, and I know that she has made her family proud

Towards the end of last year, Jayne was having regular discussions with youth workers about wanting to find permanent employment and her passion for supporting people in care.

At the Stars Awards, Jayne was awarded the Get Ahead award for the achievements she has made within her volunteering role. In September 2022 she was named Newcomer of the Year by national adult health and social care charity Making Space.

Jayne is now working full time in a residential care home through Oldham College’s supported internship, and has been recommended for further awards.
