Sport England and the Toyota Parasport Fund have awarded £5,000 to allow Mahdlo to grow their well established Ability Basketball project.
The project, designed to increase the number of young people with a disability in Greater Manchester playing sport, will see at least 150 young people with a disability try wheelchair basketball and other wheelchair-based sports over 12 months.
This will include young people attending Mahdlo Ability Zone in Oldham and children attending primary schools across Greater Manchester through joint work with Manchester United Foundation.
Sport England in 2019 reported Oldham to be the worst local authority nationally for young people active outside of school, whilst those with disabilities are much less likely to take part in sport than non-disabled people (Tackling the Facts, 2017). This project will allow Mahdlo to continue to effectively tackle these issues.
